How to Add Animations in Google Slides: A Complete Tutorial

Google Slides doesn’t get enough credit for its animation features. Sure, it’s not PowerPoint — you won’t find 3D morph transitions or motion paths here. But what Google Slides does offer is a surprisingly capable animation system that’s fast to set up, works across every device, and (most importantly) won’t break when you share your deck with someone using a different operating system.

I’ve watched people spend 45 minutes adding fly-in effects to every bullet point on every slide, then wonder why their audience looks glazed over by slide three. So before we get into the how-to, here’s the principle that should guide everything: animations should reveal information at the right moment, not decorate your slides.

With that out of the way, let’s get into it.

The Two Types of Animation in Google Slides

Google Slides separates animations into two distinct buckets, and understanding the difference will save you a lot of confusion.

Slide transitions control how you move between slides — the visual effect that plays when you advance from slide 4 to slide 5. Think of these as the page turn.

Object animations control how individual elements — text boxes, images, shapes, charts — appear, disappear, or move within a single slide. These are what let you reveal bullet points one at a time or make an image fade in when you click.

Most people conflate the two and end up applying transitions when they wanted object animations, or vice versa. The controls live in different places, and they behave differently. Here’s exactly where to find each one.

How to Add Slide Transitions (Step by Step)

Slide transitions are the simpler of the two. Here’s how to set them up:

  1. Click on the slide you want to add a transition to in the slide panel on the left.
  2. Go to Slide → Transition in the top menu bar (or right-click the slide and select “Transition”).
  3. The Motion panel will open on the right side of your screen.
  4. Under Slide Transition, click the dropdown that says “None” by default.
  5. Choose from the available options: Dissolve, Fade, Slide from right, Slide from left, Flip, Cube, or Gallery.
  6. Use the speed slider to control how fast the transition plays. The default is medium, and honestly, that’s usually fine. Going too slow makes your presentation feel sluggish.
  7. Click Apply to all slides if you want the same transition throughout your deck.

Which transition should you pick? Fade and Dissolve are the safest choices — they’re subtle enough that they add polish without screaming “look at my transition!” Cube and Gallery look interesting in preview but tend to feel gimmicky after the third slide. Flip is… fine for a very specific creative context, but I’d skip it for anything corporate.

One thing that trips people up: if you apply a transition to slide 5, it plays when you arrive at slide 5 — not when you leave it. So the transition you set on slide 1 plays at the very start of your presentation, which is usually a waste.

How to Add Object Animations (The Useful Part)

This is where Google Slides animations actually earn their keep. Object animations let you control when and how individual elements appear on a slide, which is incredibly useful for:

  • Revealing bullet points one at a time during a talk (so the audience reads what you’re discussing, not what’s coming next)
  • Making a chart appear after you’ve set up the context
  • Fading out one image and fading in another for a before/after comparison
  • Drawing attention to a specific part of a complex diagram

Here’s the step-by-step:

  1. Select the object you want to animate — click directly on the text box, image, shape, or whatever element you’re targeting.
  2. Go to Insert → Animation, or open the Motion panel from Slide → Transition (it’s the same panel — object animations live below the slide transition section).
  3. Click + Add animation in the Object Animations section.
  4. Choose your animation type from the dropdown. You’ll see options like:
    • Appear — the element just pops into existence. No frills.
    • Fade in — a smooth opacity change from invisible to visible. This is the one I use 90% of the time.
    • Fly in from left/right/bottom/top — the element slides in from an edge. Good for emphasizing direction or sequence.
    • Zoom in — scales the element up from nothing. Can work for images, tends to look odd with text.
    • Spin — rotates the element as it appears. Unless you’re presenting to a kindergarten class, skip this one.
  5. Set the trigger: On click (you manually advance it), After previous (it plays automatically after the last animation finishes), or With previous (it plays at the same time as the previous animation).
  6. Adjust the speed slider. Fast is usually better than slow — a 0.5-second animation looks intentional; a 2-second animation feels like waiting for a webpage to load on dial-up.

Animating Text by Paragraph (The Feature Everyone Wants)

Here’s the most common animation scenario: you have a slide with five bullet points, and you want them to appear one at a time as you click through your talk. Google Slides handles this, but the way it works isn’t immediately obvious.

When you select a text box and add an animation, Google Slides will animate the entire text box by default — all five bullets appear at once. That’s not what you want.

To animate by paragraph:

  1. Select your text box.
  2. Add an animation (Fade in works great here).
  3. Check the box that says “By paragraph” — it’s right there in the animation settings, but it’s easy to miss because it’s a small checkbox below the speed slider.
  4. Now each paragraph (each bullet point) will animate separately with its own click.

A common frustration: the “By paragraph” checkbox only appears for text boxes that actually contain multiple paragraphs. If your text box has one line, you won’t see it. And it treats each hard line break (Enter key) as a separate paragraph — so if you’ve used Shift+Enter for line breaks within a bullet, those won’t split into separate animations.

This is also where the trigger settings become critical. If you set all five paragraphs to “On click,” you’ll need to click five times to reveal them all. That’s usually what you want for a live talk. But if you’re creating a self-running presentation (for a kiosk or a shared link), you might set the first paragraph to “On click” and the rest to “After previous” with a 1-second delay between each, so they cascade automatically.

Controlling Animation Order and Timing

Once you start adding multiple animations to a slide, order matters. And this is where Google Slides can get messy if you’re not paying attention.

In the Motion panel, you’ll see a numbered list of all animations on the current slide. This list determines the playback order. You can drag and drop entries to reorder them — grab the animation and move it up or down in the list.

Here’s a practical example. Say you have a slide with:

  • A headline (no animation — it’s visible from the start)
  • A bar chart that should appear when you click
  • An annotation arrow that should appear after the chart
  • A callout text box that appears at the same time as the arrow

Your animation order would be:

  1. Bar chart — Fade in — On click
  2. Annotation arrow — Fade in — After previous (with a 0.3-second delay)
  3. Callout text — Fade in — With previous

The “With previous” trigger on the callout makes it appear at the exact same moment as the arrow, creating a coordinated reveal. And because the arrow is set to “After previous,” there’s a brief pause after the chart appears before the arrow and callout show up — giving your audience a moment to look at the chart before you direct their attention.

This kind of sequencing is what separates a good animated presentation from one that feels like a random cascade of things flying in. Every animation should have a reason.

Exit Animations and How to Make Things Disappear

Google Slides also supports exit animations — Fade out, Fly out, Disappear, and so on. These remove an element from view, which is useful when you want to show something temporarily and then clear it off the slide.

A practical use case: you’re comparing two approaches. You show Approach A with a fade in, talk about it, then fade it out and fade in Approach B in the same position. This keeps everything on one slide instead of forcing you to create two nearly identical slides.

To add an exit animation, the process is the same as adding an entrance animation — select the object, click + Add animation, but choose from the exit options (Fade out, Fly out to left, Disappear, etc.).

One gotcha: you can add both an entrance and an exit animation to the same object. The entrance plays first (obviously), and then the exit plays whenever its trigger fires. But if you accidentally set both to “On click” without realizing, you’ll click once to show the element and need to click again to hide it — which can throw off your rhythm during a live presentation if you’re not expecting it.

My recommendation: if you’re using exit animations, test your slide in presentation mode (Ctrl+Shift+F5 jumps to the current slide) before you present for real. Walk through every click. Count them. Know exactly how many clicks each slide requires.

Five Animation Mistakes That Make Your Slides Look Amateur

1. Animating every single element. If everything on your slide flies in, fades in, or zooms in, nothing stands out. Animation works through contrast — it’s effective because most of your content is static. A good rule: animate no more than 2-3 elements per slide.

2. Using different animation types on the same slide. Your title fades in, your image flies from the left, your bullet points zoom in, and your footer spins. It looks chaotic. Pick one animation type per slide and stick with it. Fade in is almost always the right call.

3. Setting the speed too slow. A 3-second fade-in feels like an eternity when you’re standing in front of an audience. Aim for 0.3 to 0.7 seconds for most animations. Anything longer than 1 second should be a deliberate creative choice, not the default.

4. Forgetting to test in presentation mode. Animations behave differently in the editor versus presentation mode. The timing feels different when you’re full-screen with an audience. Always run through animated slides at least once in presentation mode (click the Present button or press Ctrl+F5).

5. Using animations as a substitute for good structure. If your slide is so dense that you need animations to make it digestible, the real problem is the slide itself. Split it into two or three slides instead. Animations should enhance clear content, not rescue cluttered content.

Transitions and Animations on Mobile and Tablet

One of Google Slides’ advantages over PowerPoint is that animations play reliably on mobile devices. If someone opens your shared presentation on an Android phone or iPad, the animations will work — no plug-ins, no compatibility mode, no prayer required.

But there are a couple of limitations worth knowing:

  • You can’t add or edit animations from the Google Slides mobile app. You can only view them. All animation setup needs to happen on a desktop browser.
  • Complex animations with many “After previous” sequences can lag on older tablets. Keep it simple if you know your deck will be viewed on mobile.
  • The “By paragraph” text animation works on mobile, but the tap targets can feel finicky — you sometimes need to tap twice to advance.

If your presentation will be shared as a link (rather than presented live), keep animations minimal. Viewers scrolling through on a phone often find animations more annoying than helpful because they have to keep tapping to reveal content they just want to read.

When to Skip Animations Entirely

Not every presentation needs animation. Here’s when you should probably leave them out:

  • Shared decks that won’t be presented live. If you’re emailing a deck to a client or posting it to a team drive, animations just slow down the reading experience. The viewer has to click through each animation to see content they’d rather just scroll past.
  • Quick internal updates. Your weekly team standup doesn’t need fade-in effects. Get in, share the information, get out.
  • Decks with 40+ slides. The more slides you have, the more you’ll resent maintaining animation settings across all of them. And your audience certainly won’t notice or appreciate the consistency effort.

Animations work best in live, high-stakes presentations where you’re controlling the pace of information: a client pitch, a conference talk, a training session, or a board meeting. In those contexts, revealing information strategically is genuinely powerful. Everywhere else, it’s overhead.
